The 2nd craft is an interactive card with a lid that opens when you pull the strip of paper. It has fewer steps to make than the 1st craft and is easier. It's simple, but it's a new experience for children who have never had this kind of information or experience before. When they pull it open properly, they would feel a sense of accomplishment.
Since this craft is in the form of a card, we had the children write a simple essay on it. The theme was something they are proud of, something they want to praise themselves for. Something good they have done recently, a good idea they came up with, something they have become able to do, something they are good at...
When we once asked children in this community what their strengths were, most of their answers were like getting good grades in class or helping with housework. Maybe it's because they live a life where they don't have the time to think or don't have the advantage to think deeply about themselves or things around them. But still, no matter how limited their lives may be, we want them to live every and each day they have to the fullest. They can somehow go to school, somehow have something to eat... such small days should not be always the same. We want them to experience that differences will appear after accumulating something for a week or for a month or year.
The above theme was presented as a first step in helping children become aware of their potential. It's wonderful that they always take clean the house and care of chickens and cows, but the idea was to get them to take another look at what else they have done and what other things they have thought about. We hope that they would take this opportunity and start their life with wider horizons, starting even from tonight or tomorrow.
