The drawings really show the individuality of the children. To give some ideas to children, I printed out an easy-to-understand sample of some general new year cards and showed it to them; however, children who had used to drawing were just drawing their favorite things such as the Cambodian flag, flowers and butterflies. When we explained them that symbols of good fortune are sometimes drawn on a new year card, such as Mt. Fuji or the first sunrise, some children put a rising sun from hills. I have the impression that many Cambodian children are good at copying pictures. And in our program this time, especially girls imitated the detailed pictures of the prepared samples beautifully and colored them beautifully.
Whereas those with creative ideas flew a flag with 2023 written on it by an airplane, or put 2023 in balloons, or drew a snowman in the Cambodian landscape with coconut palms and stilt houses, creating very fun worlds.
The children who participated for the first time do not seem to write essays or draw pictures very much usually. The majority of them chose the simplest design from the samples and drew it. They couldn't come up with their own ideas but they still thought they had to draw something, and then they probably picked the one they could draw the best. This time it was the first time for them to do all these activities and I certainly think this is everyone's best. But I'm also sure that they will express themselves more as they have more opportunities to draw or craft, and as they get used to our program.
