Examining programs

Updated: Nov 15, 2018

I had a meeting with local staffs to get advised for our education program for the next foster children visit.  There are cultural differences between our children and me.  Thinking ways and grammatical constructions are different.  I wanted to know some good ways to explain things to children.

As for the 1st program, about grouping sentences of the same kind of topic in one composition,

I was thinking to make an example composition just like a letter that many children usually write, so that they are familiar with what I am talking.  But in reality, the content of their letters are mostly very thin.  Grade, test score, future dream, weather, favorite food… but most of the time there is only 1 sentence about a certain topic, and it’s not enough for a practice to group up topics to make distinct paragraphs.

Also, some may think sentences about a grade and academic records are categorized under a topic of school while others may think they are both about the writer.  Actually, our children typically write about themselves in their letters and it’s so rare that the social situation is explained or natural scenery is described.

And therefore for a categorizing practice, we decided to make a composition which consists of many sentences as well as a topic of each of those should be able to clearly and easily recognized by everyone.  This exactly talks about a flower, this clearly talks about a food, something like that.

As for the 2nd program, about 5W1H, we agreed to use a picture.  We divide children into some smaller groups and each group gets 1 picture and tries to describe the picture using as many sentences of 5W1H as possible.
