Food education (2)

The volunteer student team explained about 3 great nutrition groups, and showed examples which food belongs to which group.  They put big food illustrations onto a big circle chart which was divided into red, yellow and green sections.  They also gave out some explanations what it means by producing energy or what it means by helping body functions.

With that explanation, children divided themselves into smaller groups, and we lead each groups to practice to classify food and to think more about nutrition.  Each group got a small circle chart with small food icons for the group work.  If children finish classifying all prepared food icons, they could still continue to think what else would belong to the red, or yellow or green section.

Then we checked answers altogether.  At one class, we asked like “where does this eggplant belong to?” and any child who knew the answer came up and presented the answer.  Almost all children were so active and willing to speak out an answer in front.  At another class we ourselves showed the answer by putting big icons on a big chart.  In this way children were also very excited to watch where in the chart --either red, yellow, or green-- our hand with the food icon stops.  It appeared they all enjoyed this class.

There are many patients of lifestyle diseases in Cambodia.  We hope children will make use of the knowledge as much as possible from now on.
