Word play with cards (1)

A volunteer group came to support an educational program in a remote area. We let children to make cards by themselves and play with those. This game can enhance children’s vocabulary, creativity, and artistic expression.

In Khmer language there are 33 consonants, and we assigned every child with some of those consonants. And each child tries to make up sentences starting with those particular Khmer letters. Then he/she draws a picture representing the sentence. The sentence card and picture card are 1 pair. We arranged that each child could make at least 3 sets of them. The children needed to know a lot of vocabulary, so we asked local teachers for cooperation and the children could ask them for help.

The children in the lower grades were thinking and drawing more actively, being excited about using crayons. As children get a little older, they may start thinking that this sentence may not be smart enough or sound nice from the eyes of others around and hesitate to express what they actually thought. Or even if they come up with a sentence, they may end up turning it down, thinking that they can't draw the picture about it. And it takes longer time to get started, I wonder.
