Handmade tropical soap

Updated: Nov 6, 2020

Education of washing hands is not easy to become a habit unless people realize it’s importance or unless clean water is available. This time we approached this issue from a different angle.

Using a MP soap with which one can make a favorite kind of soap easily, we produced an opportunity for children to make their own soaps. We expected that children would be motivated if the finished product looks beautiful, so we melted transparent MP soaps and put pressed flowers in it.

If a microwave were available it would be very quick and easy to melt the soap, but we didn’t have one and such electricity was not available either. Therefore we simply heated to melt soaps in boiling water. Children went out to collect flowers and put them into a mold.

When we took out hardened soaps from a mold, children were so excited to see the beautiful clear soaps with colorful flower petals.

We guided them to wash hands with those soaps. Since soaps were not enough for all children at the site, we cut each soap to share for everyone. Everyone really wanted to get a piece of this beautiful soap, and they were very happy to wash their hands with it.

It seems there were many children who just wanted to bring back the soap and keep it at home. This product was that much attractive for children. Nonetheless, there would be meaningless if they just keep a soap without using it. Next time it would be good to make a soap which contains a small toy that children can take out and play with after using up the soap.
