Including our foster children, we planned to conduct some education programs for children of their area.
One of such programs is a craft-work with color papers to make a pop-up card. A popping-out part is used to resemble a flower bouquet. Children are going to make flowers by cutting color papers along a concept of symmetry.
The aims of this activity are:
① To know that a 3D shape can be produced from a plain paper.
② To learn about symmetry
When we fold a paper in half and cut out a particular shape, what kind of shape will come out when we open the paper? What about when we fold a paper into 4? We let children think by themselves first. And then we check the correct answer all together.
③ To cut with scissors.
We prepare a few practice questions for children to cut out symmetrical shapes. We let them follow us, folding a paper carefully in half with each edge being met and cutting that folded paper. Children …or even adults have little idea in their daily lives to fold something while making the edges neatly meet. So we shall take time to guide them. They also have little opportunity to use scissors every day. Instead of scissors they cut by teeth or tear by something sharp like a pen.
④ To cut freely and gain more findings
We deliver some more color papers for each child so that he/she can try out many ways to cut.
⑤ To paste with a glue
We let them choose their favorite ones among all of their cutting works and paste them onto the mount, where a 3D bouquet is formed. People rarely use a glue in the life, and so this shall be a new experience for many children, too.
This is our plan.
