Our language program for December was word-chain game and description game.
As for the word-chain game, it was the 2nd time for most of our children to play and so they were smoothly playing it this time. In Cambodian language, it seems difficult to make a word with the last letter of the given word. Instead, they use the last syllable of the previous word to connect the next.
Among words which consist of 2 syllables, some Cambodian words make sense even though those 2 syllables are replaced each other. Children bursted into laughter with such an answer.
Description game was played by 2 teams as a pair. One team describes something and the other team guesses. Active child was giving out a lot of explanation alone by him/herself, but we paid attention to everyone in a team to think about the given theme how to describe it.
In the beginning, children were just following our direction to list up descriptions of the given theme, but surely it is not fun if the other team easily guess right. Hence they gradually tried to think how to give a hint, which may not obviously imply the answer. For example, if the answer is a tiger, they couldn’t mention its color. It was a bit hard for them to squeeze out other hints other than “big,” “strong/dangerous” and “animal.”
Anyway, everyone seemed very excited to make a correct answer. All teams really enjoyed the game. If they like it, we can do it the next time again, with the level raised a bit. This time the themes to describe or guess were food, animals and everyday items, but next time they may be able to challenge to describe actions for instance.
