We visited children of another area, in an island. Over here, too, we’d like to gradually start educational activities such as writing, drawing and craft-making. First of all, we asked them to write about their favorite point within themselves, i.e. their good point, strong point, or an ability that they are proud of. When we start to support children we collect their basic personal and family information. In addition to that, from their writings we expected to learn more of their personalities.
Here I noticed something. Some children wrote upside down on a given postcard or letter pad. Obviously it is not important for them from where or to which direction to write. They were really concentrating on writing anyway. They may show this attribute because they are in such an environment where they regard something practical as more important.
Before, in another area, I prepared papers with very beautiful illustrations to attempt to rise children’s motivation. But many children just put words across those illustrations ignoring the existence of the art. There were still more spaces to write, though.
What people put as priority may vary in each country. I don’t know how it is in fact in another country. I only guess for some countries most people may somehow avoid to write crossing on an illustration if it’s not the background. Because people recognize its value as a decoration. Because it’s already beautiful as an illustration, just like a picture is painted on a wall to prevent graffiti.
Speaking of the top and bottom of a card or letter pad, it should be clear once we put our focus on the illustration. Even though our cultures are different, I just hope children here can also have a lot of experiences where their heart can be moved even slightly with something beautiful.
