Another activity of this day was a program using watercolors. The feeling of painting with watercolors is a little different from the feeling of drawing with colored pencils or colored pens. We had them experience new sensations while mixing water and mixing colors. Paintbrushes were not enough for the number of all children, so we also prepared cotton balls so that they could either draw or make patterns by the cotton ball at any time.
With cotton balls alone, children showed us variety of lovely individuality. Some children scattered colors all over and others made cotton-patterned sky or grasslands, creating a landscape. Meanwhile, it seems that many children were nervous about using a paintbrush. They first drafted their names with a pencil and then traced those carefully with a brush. After that, children who like drawing actively used various colors to paint the sun and flowers with a brush.
I wanted to make the paint program even more interesting, so I introduced them a fallen-leaf stamp. Put colors on leaves and stamp them. I had saved some fallen leaves and dried them for this day and showed them how it works. Then the children freely gathered weeds and leaves around and tried various shapes. It seems that they made many discoveries, while getting delighted when a beautiful pattern was made and laughing each other at a different shape from one expected.
The children were very focused on completing their work, and we even worried that the activity time would be prolonged. Everyone wants to create something that they are satisfied with. They had a joyful time, I felt, and seeing the children proudly taking pictures with their works made us happy too.
