What do you like?

Updated: Nov 6, 2020

I interviewed each of our foster children on the island.

I asked them what they like so that we can refer to it when we could bring souvenirs once in a while. When I find a cute hair accessory for example, I usually wonder what kind of pattern or color I should pick. I think this is a good opportunity for foster parents, too, to get a clearer idea about the child.

We can hardly get a satisfactory answer if we just simply ask them, “what do you like to do?” The first thing that comes up when we ask what you are doing when you have free time is to read a school book. Is it true? It's an unreliable answer ....

I wrote about children's leisure about three years ago, but it's still the same in rural areas. There seems to be nothing else to do other than helping the house. Or are they just shy? Or maybe they don't have a habit of thinking around.

The wide range of questions such as “what do you like?" does not get an answer. If a child replies “I like to read a school book,” then we shall ask “which story do you think interesting in the book?” We can see what kind of child he/she is little by little by asking like, “which animal do you like? What kind of game do you play? Do you play with you friend or alone?”

It is fun and a pleasure to know each of them. However, it will surely be beneficial for the child if he/she can think more and broader from one thing. If there are many children who are not good at playing like “a word association game,” I would like to make up a program to introduce such games here as well.
