Children's writing works are returning to me from translators. They wrote about their families. By seeing those, some points caught my eyes.
One thing that surprised me was a few children who usually don’t write letters to their foster parents were actually able to finely describe each family member.
Before letting children start writing, we gave some examples what to write about their family members. We used height & skin color (there is no discrimination with skin colors in Cambodia) as examples. And so some children just followed the examples and wrote age, height and skin color of their family members. We always face this reality that children have a limitation to develop the content by themselves from what is given. And of course we are going to change this reality.
On the contrary, a small number of children got a hint from these examples and extended the content of their writings. They added a type of hair (straight, wavy, curly), length of hair, shape of face, favorite food and so on.
