We visited our foster children and we carried out language programs.
Many children were bewildered at first with the 5w1h-practice, a practice to make sentences with 5w1h elements within a given picture.
They had total freedom to make up sentences and so I expected there would be lively communications going on in each group, but the reality was not. When they started to think “who,” they got stuck not being able to choose if that certain character in a picture should be male or female. They couldn’t think where this character was going. It may not a matter of their ability to write but a matter of getting use to imagine, I guess. Volunteer staffs patiently guided children how to think.
Some were good at making up stories and created sentences which fully described every situation of the given picture. Finally every group presented its most well-made composition. By seeing their compositions evoked laughter from other children, I could imagine those groups had brought abundant creativity into their works.
