March

Last year BBE tried to promote iodine intake among the residents in the island.

This year a Japan medical team has targeted patients’ families of thyroid disorders in the island, to provide them with iodinated soup powders, and to keep record of their status. We provide them with kelp powder for making soup.

Patient families mark the date that they eat kelp soup on a provided calendar, and medical staffs from Japan visit the island and check it every few months. Through this process, we shall be able to frame a next plan to improve their disorders.

May

BBE again received a doctor from the cooperating medical team in Japan.  Together with local doctors we visited the island.  A medical assistant in the island also joined us to visit each target family.

We took a record of body temperature and BP, and also took urinary samples from all family members.

Urinary samples were taken in March, too, and a comparison of the urinary iodine in March and May found that iodine values were increased as a result of eating kelp soup powder.

September

Two local doctors joined 2 nurses from Japan, visiting the island for the 4th time this year for iodine follow-up project.  BBE crossed the river to visit the island for 2 days during our stay in the province, and we finally obtained 24-hour urine from the targeted goiter patients.

Until now we tried to see the transition of iodine value only through spotted urine sample, but more exact relationship between an intake of kelp powders and an improvement of iodine value will be come out this time, we expect.

On the 1st day BBE distribute kelp soup powders for the next few months to the targeted patient families.  We received a cooperation from family members for urine samples.

On the 2nd day, after collecting 24-hour urine samples, we visited some hypertensive patients for life style guidance.  We also checked their daily food.

October

BBE welcomed a volunteer teacher from Japan.  We visited an island to introduce water-painting & origami to the children there.

Schools are in a long vacation until the end of October in Cambodia, but more than 40 secondary school students got together for our program.

Children enjoyed to learn these new activities and many others who were not originally in the program were also showing their interest.

BBE hopes that they would find a delight to express their feelings with colors and a delight to create.  These would enhance their views and life itself.

December

BBE cooperated with a medical team from Japan and carried on a practical training for local young doctors and medical students.

Medical team introduced their iodine project conducted throughout the year.  Iodine deficiency is very common in Cambodia, and it’s beneficial for future doctors to know some effective improvement methods.  They also learned how to palpate thyromegal, not only depending on a stethoscope.

They also practice to distinguish abnormal heart & lung sounds.

For the following 2 days, they joined a medical service with the medical team in a remote community.
