April

We carried out a mobile library when we visited our foster children in Takeo.

A box of English picture books and easy novels were donated from the US.  We lent them out to those who were interested in English and they will return those books back to us at our next visitation in summer.

Second language classes are still not common in a public school especially in rural areas.  Mainly high schoolers who have some knowledge of English came to get books, while smaller children also showed some interest since it was a kind of fresh experience.

We hope this opportunity shall motivate their learning further.

April - Khmer New Year

BBE visited Koh Chreng island during the Khmer New Year.

We prepared an opportunity for the island people all from children through adults to enjoy the holiday with traditional games.  That was a request from the island.  Surely, it is important for us humanity to enjoy their cultural life as a community.  We helped them out to organize the gathering and to realize it financially.

We prepared holiday souvenirs to elders and games winners.

May

Cooperating with Japanese medical team, BBE visited the island with 2 local medical students for thyroid examination of our target patients.

Over the past 2 years the medical team has found new iodine deficiency patients, and now there are total 62 target patients to provide kelp powders to and keep a record of their improvement.

The examination was held at the island health center on the 1st day and at a public building on the 2nd day.  The 2 nurses working at the health center also helped the medical team while observing how they treated thyroid patients.  It was a good opportunity for those nurses to learn the current situation of iodine deficiency of the island, which was one of big health problems in that island.

Some patients who had continued to take kelp powders showed significant decrease of swelling of the thyroid gland.  That’s a pleasant result.

August

Crossing the rising Mekong River in the middle of the rainy season, we carried out educational activities for children in Koh Chreng island.

We conducted 3 kinds of programs with 7 enthusiastic cooperators from Japan.  The programs were: Experiment of electricity (electromagnetic force), Craft work with symmetrical shapes, and Experiment of the relationship between shape and strength of a paper bridge.

In the original plan, the children from 4th grade to 6th grade from one primary school located in the center of the island would join our program.  But on that day more than 200 children gathered from all 3 primary schools and even a secondary school of the island.  To divide them into 3 classes were our 1st challenge.

Nonetheless, our volunteer tour participants worked flexibly for any situations and made the program wonderful, where we were able to provide local children with new experiences and new findings.

During the rainy season many areas are suffered from a flooding disaster.  Some districts in Kratie province, especially along the Mekong River were flooded, too.

BBE, together with 2 Cambodian doctors and Japanese nurses, carried out a medical service in Da commune, Chet Borey District, targeting for those who had escaped from the flood.
