April

A Korean hospital, which benevolently comes to Cambodia every year for medical service, introduced us a medical training scholarship program in Korea.

BBE cooperated with Cambodian government, selected applicant doctors, and assisted their visa application processes.

Cambodian medical specialists have now gained a chance to deepen the knowledge and skills of their fields for 8 weeks, from the middle of May to the beginning of July.  This experience will be very meaningful in the medical development in Cambodia.

May - July

4 doctors were accepted from Cambodia to join the scholarship program hosted by Korea Health Industry Development Institute.

After the orientation with all other participants, they transferred to the hospital in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.

Their training started in the middle of May, and they have been learning fine.

May

According to the medical examination taken place last year, 15 patients whose iodine deficiency is significant have been newly selected as targets of our iodine improvement project.  During last year our targets were 9 families, and now we take care of total 24 families to improve their iodine intake.

A doctor and a nurse came from Japan to visit those patients in the island.  BBE mobilized local doctors and guide the medical team around villages in the island.  At each patient’s house the team examined their health status and provided kelp powders.

At the end of last year a local health center was opened in the island with donations from Korean organizations.  Since February a few nurses and midwives have been sent to the health center from the provincial health department.  Approximately 100 people including pregnant women are visiting the health center per month, while insufficiency of the equipment and medicine is their main problem.  BBE is going to cooperate with those nurses and aim to improve local islander’s health.

July - August

BBE is helping 2 medical students & 2 pharmacists for their visa process.  We are going to send them to Korea for medical training in September.  Cheongshim International Medical Center in Korea is going to accept these participants to offer training programs.

Medical students are going to study in the field of internal medicine, Rehabilitation, Otolaryngology, Gynecology, & Emergency and Critical care medicine.  Pharmacists are going to learn management & oriental medicine.

It should be a good opportunity for them to deepen their knowledge and skills.  We hope they will bring fruitful experiences back to Cambodia in September.

September

4 medical students participated in a short-term training program in Cheongshim International Medical Center in Korea.  2 of them are majoring in a medical doctor’s course and the other 2 are in pharmacology.

For the former 2, each of them followed 1 particular specialist in a department of internal medicine, neurology, Ob/Gyn. ENT, and studied some treatments at each department while facing novel medical equipment.  They also experienced rehabilitation and acupuncture, which are rare in Cambodia, and attended some discussions and doctors’ visits around patients.

For the latter 2, they first learned how to manage drugs, vaccines and also some machines, and basically worked in a pharmacy.  They experienced a lob, too, during the program period.

The most important thing is that they all are fully excited with their new experiences and are eager to apply what they gained to their field.

December

A dental team came from Korea for service treatment.  Together with them BBE decided to carry on a medical service for general outpatients in Peam Ro district, Prey Veng.

It was the 1st time for us to have a service activity over there and we couldn’t estimate how many patients would come.  But it turned out that we had a lot of patients continuously visited our activity site.

We got cooperation from 2 doctors and 1 dental student.  These local doctors diagnosed and prescribed more than 400 and the dental students assisted Korean dental team, which treated 330 cases during the service period.
