In the Past
2018 December

BBE visited foster children in Takeo.

In Takeo we’ve been focusing on a program to improve children’s verbal aptitude.

This time also we lead children to play 2 word games: one is to enhance vocabulary and the other is to practice describing things as many ways as possible.

As for the word game 1, children one by one in order spoke out words -- a word starting with the last syllable of the previous word.

(If in English we can use a last letter of a given word to connect to next, but in Cambodian language it seems more appropriate to use a syllable.)

As for the word game 2, children divided into 2 teams and one team described a certain picture and the other team guessed what it would be.  Since this was a kind of a team match, children was even more excited both in explaining and guessing.

2018 August

BBE started to support 4 new children in Koh Chreng island, Kratie.

We visited each child’s house to actually see his/her life and family.  We will send the info to their foster parents abroad.

BBE gave out supporting money from foster parents to the children and encouraged them to attend our education program on the following day.  Our purpose is not merely providing financial support but providing practical contents like academic skills.

2018 April

We introduced 2 points to make their writing better: (1) to organize paragraphs according to topics and (2) to make a basic form of a sentence with 5w1h.

For (1), children practiced to categorize topics of example sentences.  For (2), children tried to describe a given picture by making sentences with 6 elements of info of 5w1h.  Some really enjoyed to make up stories from the given pictures.  And of course there were some who had difficulties to make such a sentence, but volunteer educators guided them very well how to think.

Finally we ask them to actually write a composition.  We chose a very easy theme, “family.”  We presented a hint how to start writing, which is to do some brainstorms about what to write.  After that, they can put all those info that they have written down into sentences.

2017 December

BBE introduced 3 word games to our foster children and played together in order to grow their language ability.  Children were trying hard to think of appropriate vocabularies and proverbs.

What is even better was that teachers were also observing how we were playing.  It would be great if this kind of games can be taken into children’s daily life or in a classroom to nurture their language ability and knowledge.

2017 March

BBE has a foster children program.

In March one foster couple visited Cambodia and spent a time with their supporting children.

BBE foster children are living in an island in Kratie Province.  This time the foster parents and children met in Kratie town, ate and walked around the town together.

Those children usually don’t have an opportunity to get out of their island, so looking around the town itself – including markets and vehicles – was a great stimulation for them.

In the future we want to bring more children for a field trip to enrich their experience.
