Activities 2019

★ The latest article will be listed below.

April

Khmer New Year is coming up.

BBE visited our foster children in Takeo with New Year gifts.

As for educational programs, we provided some book-readings for primary school children.  The important point about reading a book is that the readers or the listeners can experience the story in their minds.  Without actually experiencing in a real world, children can feel other characters’ hearts and think about particular situations described in a book.  This can help grow their minds.

For elder children, we introduced a sentence-making game.  Children draw 2 cards from a word card deck, and they need to make a sentence by using those words they draw.  The card deck contains nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, onomatopoeic words etc. This should foster their creativeness.

Early MAY

A medical team from Japan visited Koh Chreng island for a regular checkup for goiter disorder patients & hyperglycemia patients.

Iodine deficiency is a significant problem in the island.  BBE provided seaweed soup to the island commune committee, village chiefs, and teachers to raise awareness for this issue.

We .also arranged the island nurses to actively get involved in these activities so that they would learn enough how to guide island people’s health even after the medical team’s support ends.

BBE also had a soap making program with children as a hygiene education.

Children collected flower petals and we dried them to put into a soap.  Children were so excited to wash hands with the beautiful flower soaps.

Late MAY

BBE conducted 2 activities at Peam Ro Primary School: a book-reading program and a growth checkup for children.

For the reading program, we introduced new books.  We believe that a chance to meet new books will help expand children’s perspective.

We guided children to describe the story that they’d just listened to with words and drawings, and then to give a presentation in turn to the whole class so that no one would miss the fun of the new books.

For the growth check for children, we are suggesting to schools that keeping a record of height, weight, vision, and if possible teeth and auditory sense shall be helpful in order to make sure of children’s healthy growth.

It was the first time to do in Peam Ro primary school, so we also measured mid-upper arm circumference of children to see their nutritional status.

From questionnaires, too, we gained some significant info about children.  We’ll give feedback to the school and inform the health policy-making body of the royal government as well.

JULY

A Scout group came from Japan to Cambodia and visited schools in Kirivong, Takeo.

The star festival, one of Japanese summer cultures, was shared with children.  By a picture story show, children listened to a story of the origin of the festival.  To learn about the story as knowledge is not so important, but to experience a new story is meaningful for children.  And they experienced cutting and pasting to make festival crafts.

They also made a fan.  Holding papers in a certain way, creating colors and dying the paper are all new and fun experiences for them.

AUGUST

The Scout group visited a secondary school in Kirivong to share Scout work as an useful skill in a life: ways of tying ropes, a method of stopping blooding and aiding a sprained toe etc.

We appreciate the secondary school teachers for joining us and helping students better understand.

SEPTEMBER

Hurricane hits the US east coast, typhoons hit Korea, Japan and other Asian countries, and intensive rainy weather is also affecting Cambodia.  Especially northern areas got flooded.

All these areas need proper supports, but for now we could reach out the island which is being submerged into the Mekong River.

Together with the community and village leaders of the island, we visited around the residents to distribute relief supplies such as drinking water and clothes.

.

NOVEMBER

We had medical service projects in 2 communes in Kratie, inviting a Japan medical team together with Cambodian medical students & doctors.

In Koh Chreng, besides free consultations & medications for outpatients, we completed growth check for all primary school children and 150 children’s dental treatment for 2 days.

Taking a record of growth check shall be continued in order to manage children’s health and prevent sickness.

In Thmar Krea, 300 outpatients were treated by cooperating with the local health center.

DECEMBER

We A Japanese literature teacher visited a primary school in Neak Loeung.

Good effect of reading is widely well-known.  This time she came to introduce children how to “enjoy” books.

Our program contained drawings and word games, too, to develop children’s capability to express / describe what they think.
